The history of this form of human body-art (decorative body modification) called "tattoo" began thousands of years ago & is as diverse as the people who wear them. These permanent designs—sometimes plain, sometimes elaborate, always personal—have served lots of functions: amulets, status symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, adornments, & even forms of punishment. Tattooing in Japan is thought to return to the Paleolithic era, some ten thousand years ago. Various other cultures have had their own tattoo traditions, ranging from rubbing cuts & other wounds with ashes, to hand-pricking the skin to insert Dyes.
