Sunil Pai aka Sunny of God Gift Tower, Hill Road - S.V Road Junction, Bandra(W), Mumbai-400051, has inked this Tibetan tattoo, which reads “oM ma Ni padme hUM”. This is a well known mantra in Tibetan Buddhism. This is a very hard phrase to read because it is really Sanskrit.

Tattoos are not new in India but are a growing fad here. Our grandparents can be seen with atleast one small tattoo on hand whether it is a “Trishool”, or a simple “Om”. Ladies were seen with three black dot tattoo on their chin or a “Chakara.” The word tattoo was this much small in early India but now with Westernization even the meanings of tattoo are changing for youngsters. Tattoos are becoming a symbol of their modernization and the day is not far when these small tattoos will take the place of huge pieces.

Sunny says:

“Youngsters are better fond of tattoo culture, media & the internet is playing a big role for creating hype in tattoos, even celebrities, models are adopting the same culture and only few people know that Indian history has a big relation with tattoo culture. Tattoo industry will take some time to be on the ground in India, tattoo artist should take a responsibility to hype up tattoos in what level it should be, even I organize events, visit fashion shows, not today but one day everyone will have some large some small designs in Indian body.”

Cheers!

Where other tattoo artists in China are struggling with the conflict whether to adapt Western or images from their own culture to reflect as their tattoo designs, Dong Dong follows the work of several tattoo artists from America, Japan and Europe but he feels connected to the images and history of his culture. In other words we can simply put, his work is a true amalgamation of Western and Chinese culture.
